Ep. 013 Danny, We Hardly Knew Ye

What can we say about Danny Pink? Seriously what can we say about him??? We spent one season getting to know the second black man to be boyfriend of a companion on the show, only to have him fade into the background like everyone else around Clara. Join us as we discuss the soldier who spent his time with us doing not much more than existing for Clara. Danny Pink (and Samuel Anderson), you deserved so much better.

Episodes to watch:

    • Into the Dalek
    • Listen
    • Time Heist
    • The Caretaker
    • Kill the Moon
    • Mummy on the Orient Express

Ep. 012 Love in the Whoniverse

It’s February and we have loooooooove on the brain. Join us as we VERY MATURELY discuss the Doctor’s crushes (platonic and not), familial love, and SEX! Okay, it’s more like romantic love, which includes a smidgen of sex. Just a little. A hint of sex. A tinge. A soupçon of sex, if you will.

And enjoy the moment where we completely lose it! Dirty jokes galore!

Ep. 011 Happy New Year!

Ok, so we’re a month late, but join us as we welcome in 2018! We’re very excited for our SECOND YEAR of Woke Doctor Who and we have big plans. This year we’ll be “regenerating” (see what we did there? SEE IT???) by exploring new places and adding Companions along the way…i.e. hearing from awesome guests and chatting about whole new fandoms! And we’re really excited to give you all a chance to go to YOUR Police Call Box and leave us a voicemail about topics we’ve talked about, ones you want us to talk about, ones you care about, things you love, hate, and everything in between. We love you all and want to hear your lovely voices!

Now we invite you to don your bowties, put on your sand shoes, and take our hands and RUN! with us into the new year! <3

Ep. 010 Sorting Fez: When Fandoms Collide

Happy Christmahanukwanzakkah!!! We celebrate our inaugural year of podcasting (yay!) with a very special episode. Join us as we play Sorting Hat and sort the Doctors and their Companions into their Hogwarts Houses! Yes, these are two separate fandoms, but hey – they’re all British, so it’s fair game!

Play along with us as we:

  • Rep our own house(s): RAVENCLAW REPRESENT!!! CAW CAW!!!
  • Defend ALL the houses
  • Call out our proud Hufflepuff loved ones – don’t try to come for our badgers!
  • Play inadvertent footsie
  • Find out who’s a “huge conflama mess”
  • Discuss River of course
  • Discover the Clara in Toya (we’re serious!)
  • Get technical about second/rising houses (Ravendor Toya feels deep in her heart that she knows better than you and Slytherclaw Eugenia knows better than you and is ambitious enough to use that to her advantage)

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all of you for tuning in and showing us love all year! We’re excited for 2018 and a new year with new podcast episodes and surprises and hope you keep tuning in!

Ep. 009 The Many Lives of River Song

In this episode, we take a journey through the lives of the devilishly delightful Professor River Song. Like the Doctor, River regenerates – and in each life, she is someone different – the beloved Baby Melody Pond, the mischievous best friend Mel, the assassin built to kill the Doctor, the Doctor’s Wife. But who is River…really? Come with us as we explore River’s (lack of) morality, celebrate her agency, and swoon when the Doctor finally returns her love. It’ll be quite a ride. But remember: There might be…spoilers, so be careful.

Oh! And Eugenia forgets her name, too! You should listen just for that!

Episodes to watch – River’s timeline order:

  • A Good Man Goes to War
  • The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon
  • Let’s Kill Hitler
  • Closing Time
  • The Wedding of River Song
  • The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
  • The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
  • The Angels Take Manhattan
  • The Husbands of River Song
  • Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
  • The Name of the Doctor

Ep. 008 Domestic Violence as a Plot Device in the Whoniverse

Content/Trigger Warning: Child abuse, physical abuse, sexual violence

Domestic and sexual violence are horrible realities for so many. Minefields surround any film portrayals: Will it upset survivors? Will the show’s stance be clear? Will the subject be given the serious treatment it deserves? We want showrunners and writers to be sensitive to the real impact it can have on the people watching. So why do we see it pop up so commonly in the Whoniverse?

Episodes to watch:

  • Classic Who – The Twin Dilemma
  • Fear Her
  • The Idiot’s Lantern
  • The Sound of Drums
  • The Last of the Time Lords
  • The End of Time
  • The Lodger
  • A Christmas Carol

Ep. 007 East Asians in the Whoniverse: All Six of Them

Doctor Who has a spotty history with East Asians, dating all the way back to 1977 with the exploitative Talons of Weng-Chiang featuring a villain in yellowface makeup and actual East Asians as set dressing. Since then we’ve seen a whopping FIVE episodes with an East Asian character, and only SIX of those characters could qualify as more than set dressing. Join Eugenia and Toya but mostly our resident East Asian, Eugenia, as we explore stereotypes placed on on East Asians, the show’s track record with East Asian representation, and what we would like to see in the future.

Episodes to watch:

  • Classic Who – The Talons of Weng-Chiang (an episode to cringe at is more like it)
  • Aliens of London
  • Turn Left
  • Waters of Mars
  • A Good Man Goes to War
  • Sleep No More (pointed out by @InquiringJoy [thank you!], forgotten off this episode because of hatred of Clara. We’ll come back to this episode at some point in the future because it needs to be discussed.)
  • Knock Knock
  • The Pyramid at the End of the World (not mentioned in our episode, but features two blink-and-you’ll-miss-them East Asians)

Ep. 006 Screw Season 10: The Episode

In this episode, we review and discuss Season 10. We’re not going to mince words here – this was a difficult episode for us to record, because it was a difficult season for us to watch. Fandom is about love, and we started this season hoping to love it. We were not prepared for it to break our hearts, and for our beloved escapist show to bring us crashing back down to the harsh and terrifying reality that we live in. Thus ends Stephen Moffat’s reign as Doctor Who showrunner. So it goes, and we say to that, GOOD RIDDANCE.

Ep. 005 Martha My Dear

Martha! Martha! Martha! Join us as we celebrate the VERY FIRST POC COMPANION. Martha Jones was a big deal for us women of color, and frankly we are sick and tired of the hate directed at her. She was amazing. Not “not-Rose”, not “eh”, not “rubs me the wrong way” or any of these other coded excuses not to like her. AMAZING. End of story.

Episodes to watch (basically all of season 3, but we mention these specifically):

  • Smith and Jones
  • The Shakespeare Code
  • 42
  • Utopia
  • The Sound of Drums
  • The Last of the Time Lords
  • Journey’s End
  • The End of Time

Martha’s post-Companion episodes:

  • The Sontaran Strategem
  • The Poison Sky
  • The Doctor’s Daughter
  • Turn Left (mentioned)
  • The Stolen Earth
  • Reset (Torchwood)
  • Dead Man Walking (Torchwood)
  • A Day in the Death (Torchwood)

Catch Freema Agyeman in the Netflix series Sense8 too!

Ep. 004 Adipose: Fat and Fat-shaming in the Whoniverse

We live in a world where we are confronted with a beauty ideal that’s slim and fit, and as a result, many people are shamed for their size. Even our escapist fiction is rife with fat-shaming, which raises the question of where we can possibly go for relief. Join us as we delve into what Doctor Who tells us about fat.

Episodes to watch:

  • Aliens of London/World War Three
  • Love and Monsters
  • Voyage of the Damned
  • Partners in Crime
  • The Lodger
  • Closing Time
  • The Pilot

Episodes we don’t mention in name, but feature relevant examples:

  • Human Nature/The Family of Blood
  • The Pandorica Opens
  • A Good Man Goes to War
